Texas State Parks: Palo Duro Canyon State Park
Located near Amarillo, Palo Duro Canyon State Park is situated in the Texas Panhandle. It
has been open to the public since 1934. The Prairie Dog Town Fork of the Red River is credited with creating Palo Duro Canyon, which has been credited with being the second largest canyon in the United States by some. Its name, Palo Duro, means “hard wood” and was given to the park by Spanish explorers who were fascinated by the richness of the juniper and mesquite trees within the park area.
Texas State Parks: Huntsville State Park
Located in Walker County, Huntsville State Park has been open to the public since 1938.
Huntsville State Park is a heavily wooded area that encompasses Lake Raven. The park is dominated by shortleaf pines and loblolly trees. It is typical of the East Texas Pine Belt that is so attractive in its scenic beauty.
