If drifting across the High Plains, Storrie State Park might be a worthwhile stop. Unless you are a geologist, however, Storrie is more suitable as a stopover than as your ultimate destination. The park offers some excellent recreational opportunities, but the range of its activities and limited scenery would likely not warrant an extended stay for anyone who does not live locally and use the park as, more or less, a summer home and place to park the RV, or for a weekend getaway centered on water sports.

When considering the perfect location for a vacation, New Mexico is an excellent choice, especially if you are interested in state parks. Rockhound State Park is the most interesting of New Mexico’s 35 different sites, because it is one of the very few state or national state parks that actually encourage you to remove rock samples from the site, up to 15 pounds of them. Bring along a hammer, chisel and shovel and explore the beautiful landscape, collecting samples of a very diverse selection of geodes, agate, common opal, quartz crystals, perlite and jasper, just to name a few. However, you do not need to be a rockhound to enjoy this great area, which has an exciting variation of scenery and accommodations.

You can enjoy the marvelous beauty, history and varied activities offered to visitors of New Mexico’s Navajo Lake State Park throughout all seasons of the year. Navajo Lake, the second largest lake in New Mexico, covers upwards of 15,000 acres of water surface. Providing a full menu of water sports and activities, the lake is also home to a remarkable variety of both cold and warm water fish species. During the summer months, with temperatures generally around 80 to 85 degrees Fahrenheit, Navajo Lake is especially popular for boating, water skiing, and fishing. In addition, its more rugged side canyon terrain areas are great for house-boating.

If you’re new to New Mexico or just haven’t really had the opportunity to explore the National Parks in the state, then you may be left thinking that the whole state really has nothing more to offer than brilliant orange mesas and, well, a whole lot of sand. The truth is, though, that the state offers a lot of lush, green landscapes and lake scenery. Heron Lake State Park is just one example of such a park.
