Let me just tell you what Ive got (mainly for hiking) accumulated over the years and still using:

My ROKK backpack...Its 4200 ci and has seen thousands of trail miles over the years. It weighs about 3 lbs I believe. I bought it for about 60 bucks at a ebay store a few years ago and still going strong.

50 degree ultralight sleeping bag from Sportsmans guide years ago still ready for a bunch more trips. I think I paid 20 to 30 bucks on sale.

0 degree ultralight bag Sportsmans guide (weighs 3 lbs not bad) bought on sale for 50 shmackers.

I did get a few things like my stove at REI and water bladder but thats about it.
I actually wish some of my gear would wear out but it just wont die!!!!

Anybody else mindful of saving a few bucks without going to cheap?:tinysmile_grin_t:

It's cute, but I don't think I could stay in it unless I was alone! You would have to know somebody very very well to stay in it together. I do like that it's pedal powered though, very eco-friendly. What do you think?

I'm thinking of putting some of my experiences to use by writing a series of blog posts about disaster preparation, evacuation and survival. I got a big wakeup call in '05 when Hurricane Rita blew out power and running water for several weeks. We didn't even have cell phone service, all the towers were damaged.

Anyway, I would focus on things like:
making a disaster box (necessities for the household and pets for a week)

a bug out bag (72 hour kit)

identify the threats in an area (potential for flooding, wind damage, roads blocked by fallen trees, etc.)

how to safely evacuate (what to bring, which direction to go, when to leave, etc.)

how to hunker down (securing your house, minimizing damage, stocking water, etc.)

what to do once the disaster hits (taking stock, keeping calm, adapting, keeping busy)

The series would be geared toward common disasters such as hurricanes, tornadoes, blizzards and wildfires. I'd try to keep the information and instructions simple yet detailed.

I'm very familiar with hurricanes and have had run-ins with tornadoes and a couple of bad snowstorms while driving the rig. I'd need a little more info on tornadoes, blizzards and wildfires from people who have more experience with such occurrences.

What do you guys think?

I do some hiking, not as much as I would like, but some and use the same boots winter and summer. I don't change them out because they are a good sturdy pair and are finally fitted to my feet enough that they are easy to wear. My question is: Do any of you use sandals in the summer to hike in? I've seen some that have straps and look comfortable, but I don't think I could ever use them. What do you think?

I got out with a buddy of mine yesterday bowfishing for carp at the head waters of the Kankakee River. Walked a mile and didn't see a thing. Finally stood up on a bridge and waited. This can be like deer hunting from a stand. Sometimes you wait all day and see nothing, but not yesterday. It took about twenty minutes. Then this ten pounder showed up.

He's fileted out and frozen. We're going to hot smoke him today. Yummy stuff.

Hi all!

I am a long time camper who live in FL. I have just started using a hammock instead of a tent, and going lighter.

I also enjoy pipe smoking, reading, food and music all of which I can do outside by a fire. I am not a person for large groups. A few friends and family and living the simple life.

I hope to pick up some tips and friends from joining.

When I went out-of-town over last weekend, we ended up renting a cottage on Lake Cobbosseecontee. While the view of the lake was gorgeous, whenever it stopped raining, the dock wasn't in yet so we didn't get to truly enjoy the lake. We're going to try to rent the same property later in the summer as it was absolutely gorgeous and huge - 7 bedrooms plus tons of extra rooms. It will make a great location for a family vacation.

I haven't put the pictures on the computer yet, but I got some good ones. I'll try to get those uploaded so I can show you guys what a pretty lake it is. We even had a double rainbow over the water one evening after a sudden shower.

As some may know Cleburne was hit by a tornado Wednesday night, Cleburne is my home town.
We caught the edge of a tornado and had some damage to the house and loss of some out buildings and barns. Ripped the pump house to shreds and pulled the well out of the ground about 2 feet!!
House survived but major damage to the roof and windows.
Everyone made it out without a scratch!
Anyway, my time here will be short for the next week or two as we get resituated.
Insurance man should be out this afternoon and everything is tarped and boarded up ready to start rebuilding and repairs.
Glad I didn't skimp on building the house, it is built like Fort Knox.
Neighbors and folks in town were not so fortunate.....
Y'all behave while I am out.

Hi...

Remember Otzi (the "Ice Man"), who was discovered in the Tyrolean Alps in 1991? He was believed to have met his fate there 5,300 years ago.

Even he carried a survival kit, bearing some semblences to what we might carry today.

His kit included 3 flint tools, a bone awl, a lump of true tinder fungus (which can carry live coals), a copper axe, pressure flaking tools, a scraper, a drill, a small sharp flake, and a dagger.

Amazing, isn't it...that people over 5,000 years ago also carried survival kits, bearing so much resemblence to what many of us might carry now...??

Anyways, we got the bill from the hospital yesterday and they want almost three grand for taking it out. Three thousand dollars, all because we don't have health insurance. I just don't understand where three thousand dollars worth of work was performed, or where three thousand dollars worth of materials were used, or even a combination of the two. And I don't know how in the WORLD we're going to pay this bill!!
