Big Catfish Bait

I think I am going to go fishing Tuesday, since I am off work. I want to catch a decent size catfish. What kind of bait have you had luck with, when trying to catch a big catfish?

I've talked to a few old timers around here. They go buy some shrimp, leave it outside for 24-48 hours and then go fishing with it. They say the worse something smells, the better it will be.

I have also heard, that extra smelly bait attracts big catfish. I like to leave my hotdog bait, outside in the sun for a day, but I am unsure if this smelly bait is any better than regular bait. I went fishing Tuesday, but the fish were not biting. Maybe, I should try my hand at hillbilly hand fishing, if I want to catch a big catfish!
