Default Hunting dogs checked?

I have been dealing with a friend who has their dog currently undergoing heartworm treatment and it made me wonder how many hunters forget to protect their pets when going out into the woods. Fleas, tickets, HW's - all could be a bad mix for a pet, so do you pre-treat or do you skip them?

I remember when the vet showed me a jar with heart worms. It was so gross that I started getting vigilant that same day about vet checks and making sure my dogs were protected from anything and everything. Plus, for fleas, it is easier to prevent them, than get rid of them.

Isn't part of the shot regimen to prevent heart worm? I must admit, that's my assumption, but I honestly don't know. We are good about keeping our dogs' shots up to date, but should I be doing more??

Yes Betty is it and from what I can tell most vets opt for the chewables to make sure its something yummy the pup will enjoy eating. I have yet to find any decently priced ones online that you can order without paying an arm and a leg though, friend is having the same issue they want to get a good stock pile going.
