| I have heard of species going rather crazy due to interbreeding. It certain sounds like the beavers in your area did interbreed. Were they also much smaller than they should normally be? In many cases a severe case of inbreeding will cause the animal's average size to shrink too. They can also become obese as they can't remember if they have eaten or not, and so they literally eat themselves to death. Rather like we humans are doing!
