Default How long does it take to learn scuba diving?

My stepson knows how to scuba dive. I`m not sure where he learned though. It seems scary to me to go that far down. And all the dangers of coming up too fast and all that. How long does it take to learn enough so you know what your doing? I hear the news stories of people dieing while scuba diving. I`d like to do it just once and see what it looks like way down there. Like maybe in the Florida Keys where the water is really clear.

Panic is the main killer when people are scuba diving. You must be calm even when something pops up from out of nowhere.

Its not really hard to learn scuba diving. You just have to learn not to be scared.

I think there are scuba diving schools where you could learn and practice the skill for diving. Now if you really want to go diving to the sea without lessons then I guess there are professional divers that can accompany you on your dive.

There are schools that you can check out. I haven't heard of people diving without lessons. Usually there are a certain number of hours that you dive so that you are certified and there are different levels of the certification.

I am completely agreeing with you about scuba diving. I am considering it a very special and very dangerous activity. But in the same time I think that it is very interesting to dive into the sea but I don't know how to overcome my fears.

I can totally understand a fear of being under-water. Scuba-diving does make you feel very helpless. But the more you try it, the more rewarding it gets .. and the easier it gets. To conquer any fear, one must fact it head-on. I'd suggest starting out slow and doing shorter dives. I was much in the same "boat" (err .. excuse the pun) .. I learned diving in sharm-el-sheik .. and, now, make it a point to return at least once a year!
