Default Flipped - what fun!

I want to say thank God for my training as a kid in girl scout camp and for my son's training in boy scout camp.

We went out in a canoe yesterday (there were 4 canoes in total with us), we were in water that was over our heads. Well my son got a little tipsy and ended up tipping us. Brrrr.... It was cold! My hubby was in another canoe and was ready to jump out and help us flip our canoe back over but we did not need him. We (son and I) got under the canoe and flipped it back. It was pretty funny to be honest. We were in no danger and we were in our suits.

What I learned as a kid came back to me.

Have you ever tipped or flipped your canoe? Were you able t flip it back and pull yourself in? You should try it to see if you can.

LOL- last time I dumped it was in about 18 inches of water! The funniest thing was me running down the stream chasing my hat! My canoeing partner was laughing so hard she almost couldn't hold onto the canoe. I really wish i had it on video.

Haven't done the dump and climb in drill for quite a while- probably ought to get out and give it some practice.

Great fun and I'm glad that you remembered what you learned as a kid. I really need to get out there and practice. Won't that be fun - flip it over and climb in! I think I'll start in waist deep water (not over my head)...

Too funny - running for your hat! How the heck did you dump in 18 inches of water?

Hit a submerged rock at exactly the perfect angle and didn't get a brace set quick enough. I was laughing my fool head off as I hit the water. It had to be funny as hell to watch.

Did the same thing. After some Class II rapids we pulled to a calm spot and found a rock waiting to attack. The canoe rolled. My girlfriend and I hit the water but the canoe went upside down with my dog trapped underneath. Our instincts kicked in, I flipped the canoe and my girlfriend grabbed the dog. He was fine, but we had to watch our camera float downstream. We had just taken out of the dry sack.

Wow, I'm glad you got your dog but stinks about the camera. I can say that I have never flipped yet (knock on wood). I have flipped on purpose just to practice flipping it back and getting in. That was a chore!

Only flips was passing the requirement for canoeing merit badge as a scout. We had to go solo, dump it, flip it and get back in. I did it in a deep, cold water reservoir. It wasn't much fun.

Sounds like my idea of fun Grandpa! I took the same course in scouts and then I did the same in college. My buddies thought it would be fun to go out on Lake Erie and flip the canoe! I had no problem flipping it back and hopping in, 2 of my buddies struggled a bit!

I flipped twice yesterday on the Ocoee River in Tennessee, once above Double Trouble and another time at Surprise Ledge. Eskimo rolled my kayak both times and kept on going. Flipping is fun as long as you don't take any rock hits upside the head.

If you paddle you will get wet. Glad to hear you had the right attitude about the event. It is very useful in warm weather to have people capsize their boats on purpose and practice rescues in deep water.

In cold water and strong currents, capsizes are not nearly so much fun. I remember a nice April afternoon on Lake Washington (Seattle) were goofing around and my brother and a girlfriend took a swim. We were far from shore. They were ok but it woke everybody up about the dangers of cold water. Dress for immersion.
