Default J stroke?

Are there any good sites on the J stroke? I used to do it many years ago when I was in boy scouts but have since forgotten. My young fella is to little to help me paddle and I think this stroke would give me better control from what I can remember.

Wow thanks so much! I think this will make going canoeing with my young son so much easier until he is old enough to help me paddle.

Do learn the J. You have to know it well to be able to paddle effectively in the stern. It will become natural when mixed with forward strokes. You will love it!

The late Paul Mason had several great books on paddling, and a some superb videos as well. If your local library has, or can get, "Path of The Paddle" or "Song of the Paddle" I highly recommend them. His books and videos can teach you every stroke you'll ever need (and then some). My personal favorite, that has displaced the J-stroke in my repertoire of stokes he calls the "Canadian Stroke".

I had not canoed in awhile, so when I got back to it I was surprised when I found that I could still do the J stroke and it still felt so natural to me.

Yes, I believe once you learn how to paddle with J-stroke then you will never forget it. You might become rusty with the skill but you will surely remember how to do it. With me, I just observed someone how he had done the J-stroke paddling and I imitate it. I'm not an expert but at least I already know how to do it.

Paul Mason "Path of The Paddle" is excellent. After reading it I started solo canoeing just to practice the C stroke. Now I love to take that solo trip. It's just fun to paddle. It also introduce to me the draw at the beginning of the stroke which was very useful for the front person to help with the steering.
