Default Snake River

Me and some friends went river rafting down the Snake River last summer. It was a great adventure! Even though pretty much everyone rides this river, it is still fun and adventurous. We hit Big Kahuna at the right spot at the right water level and it through our guide to the front of our raft and she lost her ores. WE got them attached just in time as we hit the Lunch Counter. We also had a fun experience at Six Ordeals, if anyone knows this rapid.

The Snake River is a major tributary of the Columbia River in the U.S. states of Wyoming, Idaho, Oregon, and Washington. The river's length is 1,040 miles (1,670 km), its watershed drains 108,000 square miles (280,000 km2), and the average discharge at its mouth is 56,900 cubic feet per second (1,610 m3/s). The river flows from its source in Yellowstone National Park through a series of mountain ranges, canyons, and plains.

Snake River's drainage basin includes a diversity of landscapes. Its upper reaches lie in the Rocky Mountains. In central Idaho the river flows through the broad Snake River Plain. Along the Idaho-Oregon border the river flows through Hells Canyon, part of a larger physiographic region called the Columbia River Plateau, through which the Snake River flows through Washington to its confluence with the Columbia River. Parts of the river's basin lie within the Basin and Range province, though it is itself a physiographic section of the Columbia Plateau province, which in turn is part of the larger Intermontane Plateaus physiographic division.

I camped in Hell's Cyn this last May with some friends from ID. I forget the reservoir we were on, but it had a lot of current this year with the high water, and I got a chance to run the power boat through standing waves. It was intimidating at first especially running past bridge abutments, but with some practice in both directions it became second nature. Upstream I ran about 3,200 rpms, downstream only about 1,800 rpms, just enough to maintain steerage. Paddling and rowing experience translated directly into reading the water with a power boat. It was a lot of fun.

Please note- boats are rowed with oars and paddled with paddles.

Wow, hard to believe that that's the same body of water. Even more amazing when you consider that this is also the same river that gives us Shoshone Falls. LOVE IT!
