Default Bee hives

We seem to have a couple of in-the-ground bee hives near my house. They are in the hosta flower plants; I can see the bees coming out of the middle of the plant. How can we get rid of these safely? I’m allergic to bees and so is my hubby. Do you think we should hire a bee man or perhaps we can try to get rid of the hive at night? I’m not sure how to get rid of in-ground bee hives though.

You would have to chop the flowering plant down and then at night go out and spray down the hole. If it doesn't work you would need to call for help.

You could call around and see if any local bee keeper wants them, providing they are not yellow jackets or anything like that. Most will do it for free.

Another thing you can do is spread sevin dust around it. As the bee's fly in they will bring the poison into the hive.

Find the hole, wait till dark and NUKE em with a full can of the good stuff. Repeat the next night and fill the hole.
Just did a similar nest in my yard after the little buggers got me in the ear twice worked like a charm!!

If they are in the ground, they're more likely yellowjackets. These can sting multiple times and they HURT! If you're allergic, I would not advise doing this job yourself right now. Wait until you get a hard frost, then go out early in the morning when it's still cold and hose down the holes with something nasty. Carbon tetrachloride would be my first choice, but I belive you need a permit to purchase it legally.

Pay to have it done right the first time! Don't take chances, I'm not allergic to bees, but do have allergies in general. I know first hand what it's like to go into anaphylaxis on more than one occasion. It's not fun and scary as hell.

The beaver is right. If you're allergic you'd best have an epi pen available.

I cleared a big yellowjacket nest a few years back. I waited until Winter and dug them up. Then it was just a matter of putting them in a fire pit, pouring gas on them and barbequeing.

That reminded me of what my friend does. He takes cheap metal, melts in a fire pit, and then pours it in the opening. He says if you do it right, you can dig up the metal a few days after and you have mold of the hive. They used to do it on golf courses for ants he told me.

We have always just poured gasoline down the hole at dusk. Kills them everytime. You can go back later, and dig the hive up if you want to.

True, but pouring gasoline on the ground will also kill campclose's hostas.
