Default geo-caching?

Has anyone here tried geo-caching before? I'm thinking about getting a GPS and attempting it with some friends. It looks like a fun, fabulous way to check out new places and connect with other people who are interested in nature and the outdoors.

You know, I finally got a GPS. A nice garmin. And about a week later the wife went up to PA to visit a sick family member, and I did some house remodeling while they were gone. So I have not even had a chance to use it yet. Maybe this weekend. I was thinking a nice long hike, but I really want to try the GPS. I tried my vehicles GPS unit (it is the portable one) but it would take me forever to find the cache.

This seems like such a neat thing to try. I saw a show where this family was talking about it and it's like a treasure hunt, right. I guess there are clubs that set these things up. This might be something to really look into.

I took up Geocaching to give me a little something extra to do while out hiking around aimlessly in the woods where I live. I have over 1600 finds and have em-placed close to 90 throughout the years. I have friends who have over 10,000 finds, one is pushing 17,000 finds. There are so many aspects of caching, it can easily fit anyone's schedule or preferences. I'm speaking to folks who chose not to venture of into the woods, there are by far more urban cache now than when I started back in 2004. I prefer to stick to the wooded areas myself. Anyone in the South Chicago land suburb who would like to get out and learn more about it, give me a shout. I have several different GPS's and would more than happy to help get someone started in this activity. If your not used to getting out in the woods and want to learn a little about map and compass work we can do that too!
