Default How To Store Potatoes

I've been looking at various ways to store potatoes and I guess I'm going to have to have a wooden storage bin made that will set off of the ground. I am planning on placing them in straw also to keep from bruising them and making them rot quicker. Does anyone have any other way to store them that would be better?

We store our potatoes in the basement (where it's good and cool). We put them in a barrel and they pretty much stay fresh and "rot-free" for months.

Anywhere that is cool, dry, and dark. I leave mine in the ground as long as I can, and dig as needed. When the ground starts freezing or staying wet with snow, I put them in burlap bags in my garage under a blanket. During freezing cold snaps, I bring them in to my basement storage room. Our woodstove is in the basement, so it doesn't really stay cool enough down there for long-term storage.

I never thought about taking them down to the basement. Thanks for the idea, I am going to try that. Our potatoes seem to go bad pretty quickly where we live.

We have a storage bin in our basement that I rigged to hang from the floor jousts. It does pretty well with keeping them stored. Our basement's not heated but it gets enough heat from the house above that nothing freezes down there. We also keep our home canned stuff down there.
