Default Lottery checks bounce

I read an article today that 85 winners from the lottery in Illinois had their checks bounce when they tried to cash them. They claim it was due to short staffing. I would've thought those guys had so much money on hand that this would never happen since they take in so much from people who play. At least they are going to cover all the bank fees and give them a free ticket and of course honor those peoples winnings.

It's Illinois (my home state) and therefore, not surprising at all.

What do you mean by that Firedancer? I've never heard anything bad about Illinois. Of course it's gambling dinosaur, but you still get paid when you hit. There's no way around that when the government is involved collecting tax dollars from it.

Haha, I got such a kick out of this when I read it! I can't believe lottery checks bounced!! Why does this not surprise me?! At least the checks will be honored and the fees from the checks bouncing will be covered. But I would have been SO mad if that had happened to me, after all the elation, excitement, shock and disbelief over winning in the first place!!!

This is an amusing story. Just imagine the looks on those people's faces, when the checks bounced! One minute they are in happy shock, from winning, then their moment is shattered. I wonder if any of the winners thought they would not get the money, after all?

Another example of fiscal responsibility by government? Spend it before you get it?

Past lottery winnings are funded by incoming lottery revenue. That's how all of gov't works. Why would a gov't run lottery be any different?

This is pretty funny. If I had won the lottery and the check bounced I would feel pretty defeated. Having hopes dashed like that can not be fun. Glad to hear they will still pay up on the winnings.

Hate to break this to you, but state agencies don't run lotteries to provide excitement to the participants. It's a scam to produce revenue, of a kind that's prohibited to anybody else (except federally regulated tribes, around here). It helps if you think of it as a voluntary tax on people who don't understand probability.
