Room Temperature

Well, when I got up this Monday morning the temperature in the bedroom was a balmy 47-degrees.

How cold did you have?

Heating with wood, mine varies quite a bit. Only on the coldest nights does it dip below 45, though. Homebrewed wine ferments sloooowly at that temp, if at all.

I think I sleep better in a cool room. In the summer if it's 70 degrees, I toss and turn all night.

Wood stove had mine too hot last night as well. I try to keep the door closed so it will stay cool in there but.................

Forty seven in a building feels really cold. Maybe some more insulation or an updated woodstove would help.

I lived in an old farm house in Denver once. We left for the Holidays with minimal heat from baseboard electric. The water in the toilets had some ice in it. That was too cold.

I insulated my garage door this year which has really helped the hot water heater and furnace function better out there in the garage.

I lived in Wyoming in rented old houses that had single pane windows. I used to stay up late sometimes with my wildlife biologist friend and drink vodka and play chess. We watched the frost form on the inside of the windows when it got below about -20 degrees F.

PPine, you reminded me about the few years I spent in an old 1950s "teardrop" travel trailer, and afterward, in my 8' X 8' house (or my "cube", as I used to call it).

Winter (and Spring, and Fall) mornings I had to break the ice in my wash basin, although that was tolerable, eventually. The good part was I could keep my frozen foods right on the floor.

I can not even imagine my house getting so cold, that the water in my toilet forms ice. My house is insulated well, so it rarely gets too cold. I have to have an in-between temperature, to sleep at night.

My bedroom is in a room that was converted from a porch. It is not connected to the heating system of the house. There are mornings I wake up and it is in the 40s. I keep my robe and slippers in bed with me so I can put them on before I get out from under my electric blankets.

Those kind of rooms usually have knick names like "the meat locker." It is sort of like camping all year, or living in a Boar's Nest (bunkhouse). At my Dad's ranch in Arizona at 7,220 feet fall round-up mornings were single digits. The wood stove was old and went out by around 0300.

I am stuck in a hotel for the past few days, and a hospital tomorrow all day so it is warm. But I think it will be down to the 40s outside here in Houston.
