Spent 2.5 months up there in the Coast Guard during the exxon oil spill! Had about 1.5 months out inPrince William Sound living on a baot during the oile spill! Some of the most BEAUTIFUL country you could ever ask for! We saw eagles every day, moose, whales, otters, brown bears, you name it! It was sad for th ereason I was up there, but being from south florida, it was the first time I had seen snow fall in my life. The day we left Valdez to drive to Anchorige (sp), it was awsome! I will go back and I will take my tent!! We would party down by this small creek at night and just set the beer in the water! Didn't need coolers!!!

I joined the CG right after that spill. My first station was on Governors Island on the CGC Line (WYTL 65611) and we had to deal with a few major spills in NY Harbor. Arthur Kill and Kill Van Kull both had back to back spills. Poor Jersey.... Still havent been to AK. Hoping next year.

Alaska? I think I've heard of it. Where is it again? I think there's a State named after it.

Thanks for the nice pictures. They are certainly not near any towns. I have spent a lot of time in Alaska and recently went on a cruise with the family for a week. The cruise was by far my least favorite way to travel there. It was like going on a field trip with an apartment house full of strangers.

I highly recommend the State Ferry from WA, flying north and renting a truck and camper, backpacking or any other way of seeing the state. The cruise ships barely give a visitor time to get away from the T-shirt shops and tourist stuff and see the real Alaska which is off the beaten track. Save your money and go any other way.

Hi...

Ppine has a very good suggestion. People in southeast Alaska get around either by air, or by the Inland Sea route.

By the way, southeast Alaska is where Senator Ted Stevens wanted to build his "bridge to nowhere"...!!

The Alaska State Ferry system tends to give travelers a more intimate look at Alaska and its people. They have inside accommodations, which are not luxurious, are very adequate. Many people also opt for "camping" on the main deck.

Their Ferry System travels throughout southeast Alaska...is the only means of transportation for many...and goes as far south as Seattle.

The Inland Sea route is comprised of the ships in Alaska's State ferry system.

This thread caused me to go back and look at the pictures from my Alaska trip - what a breathtaking place! Although I don't consider myself a "cruise person" it does seem like a good way to see the Inside Passage. We flew to Anchorage and spent a few days up near Denali and the rest of the time down in Seward. We rented a cabin (shack, really) at Miller's Landing in Seward - this was the sunset view from the deck of the main lodge:

I think my favorite of all was watching the little sea otters playing in the water - hands down the cutest wildlife ever! The puffins were a close second

I've been to many states, but never Alaska! I am waiting to find the perfect cruise to tour it. I would also like to camp in Antarctica; I wonder how similar the two are?
