Ppine has a very good suggestion. People in southeast Alaska get around either by air, or by the Inland Sea route.
By the way, southeast Alaska is where Senator Ted Stevens wanted to build his "bridge to nowhere"...!!
The Alaska State Ferry system tends to give travelers a more intimate look at Alaska and its people. They have inside accommodations, which are not luxurious, are very adequate. Many people also opt for "camping" on the main deck.
Their Ferry System travels throughout southeast Alaska...is the only means of transportation for many...and goes as far south as Seattle.
The Inland Sea route is comprised of the ships in Alaska's State ferry system.
