Default Bannock

Has anyone tried eating bannock? It's little more than whole wheat or oat flour mixed with water and wrapped around a green stick. You then roast it over a fire. Some of the people where we camp gave me some last year and it's surprisingly good. I am going to try to make it when we go on our trip to The Land Between The Lakes. I later looked it up and it's been made by outdoor campers since time immemorial and was a staple for the Scottish tribes when they were travelling. You can also make it in a round shape and fry it but it's better when you roast it.

we called it twist bread when we were kids because we would make the dough into a long string and wrap it around the stick a couple times so it did'nt fall off. We simply used bisquick.

Hint; peel the bark and warm the stick to draw the sap out, then wipe the stick off before you put the dough on. Some saps are pretty untasty.

Ya want the super simple way? Bring a couple cans of bread sticks along, ya can find them with the canned biscuits in da store. twist around a stick forked sticks work best. Ya can turn em up a notch by basting with melted butter then sprinkling on garlic powder or brown suger and cinamon while roasting. can also wrap em around weenies and roast on a stick for campfire pigs in a blanket thingys. It takes a lil practice, but thats the fun of it.

That sounds really good. I'm going to have to try it. I wonder if oats would be good in it along with the flour? I would say you could do these a lot of ways. Crescent roll dough would be wonderful with cinnamon and sugar like you suggested, Cappy. Gettin' ideas here.
