Default Campfire sticks

I’m looking for ideas on making my own sticks for roasting marshmallows and hot dogs on the campfire. The wooden sticks that we bought are Junk! The catch fire and are flimsy! The only metal pokers we can find are too short and the kids complain that their hands get too hot. What do you use? Did you make them or did you buy them? I would appreciate any link to a good set of sticks or directions on what you used.

The wife bought some crazy tree one that holds a lot of marshmallows. I however follow ChadTower's method and use a stick.

You can do that with sticks off the ground too.

Sticks off the ground. Have fun cooking then play "Jacks Alive" with the kids!

The kids don't like the sticks off the ground - one got a splinter in his hot dog once and he bit into it. Ouch! Now we are looking for something that won't do this. Any other suggestions?

Poor child. :-( I wonder if you could make one from a wire coat hanger and wrap one end for a handle. Not sure how flimsy one would be so you make need to straighten out two, leave about 4-6 inches for a fork and by twisting the rest of the hanger together you may have the length you're looking for. Good luck!

Brass acetylene welding rod. 36 inches, very stiff. Then cut a 3/4 " dowel into 6" length, drill a smaller hole in the end of the dowel and force the dowel onto the rod.
wood handle won't get hot, works great

They're going to have to deal with much tougher things than that if you start camping regularly.

When in nature use what nature gives you. I have no reason to buy something that nature gives me for free.

Besides, its part of the fun finding the perfect one.
