Default Camping cakes

How do you bake a cake at the campfire? What cooking equipment do you also use aside from Dutch oven (we don't have that kind of equipment so I need another option)? Has anybody tried a making a cake of their own specialty outdoors?

Hi jeddah

Have you looked into making a cardboard box oven or maybe a Coleman Oven?

A Coleman Oven will do it, but, because the heat comes from the bottom it never browns the top.

A box oven is cheap and easy to make. It can be assembled in about an hour.

Here's a link to a Cardboard Box Oven that I made a few years ago for my grandchildren. It worked out real good and I still use it.

Give it a try, its fun.

I saw them use the card board box over on a restaurant reality show and they actually burned the bottom of the brownies they were making! I guess they really do work!

I had never heard of one of those, but it does sound like an interesting project for the next camping trip! I will definitely have to give it a try.

The key to a box oven is the foil lining and providing top and bottom heat.

I've made biscuits, French bread pizzas, etc.

Foods that take more than 20 minutes require adding more charcoals to keep the heat steady, but it can be done. If you add a lot of briquettes all at once, the food will burn, slow and steady is best.
