Default Checking temp

I was thinking the next time we are out maybe take one of those quick to make biscuits with us but I am not sure how to tell the temperature of what is cooking. Would a normal thermometer work? I know this sounds dumb but of all the things I worry about cooking over a camp, its anything dough like that always gets me.

Just wrap the dough around a stick, when it's golden brown and slides easily off the stick it is done.

I make biscuits in a buttered or oiled skillet, with a lid. I just drop a mound of dough, flatten it a bit, and put the lid on. After a few minutes, flip. My very unscientific method of checking temp is to reduce the heat if the bottom is burning before the center is baked. It works fine!

I usually don't trek very far,
when all around me black bears are.

Hi...

Some good ideas there.

Here's another one, used by housewives for years...stick a broom straw, or toothpick, into the dough. If it comes out "clean" (no dough sticking to it)...it is presumed to be done.

Steves "stick" method is one that was used by old timers when they baked bannock over an open fire.

Hark...!! Was that a hand grenade I heard exploding? Ow! Ow! Ow!
