Default Chili and winter camping

I know we have some that camp in the winter time. We do but not when it gets really really cold. We always like to have a big pot of chili when to eat. Do you? If so, do you make a big pot before you leave home and just warm it at the campfire or do you like to make it up while you're camping. I know it is easier to do at home, but I just like the smell it makes while slowly cooking on the campfire. (and I think all the other camper do also!)

I agree that sounds great. However since I backpack I rarely eat anything while out besides dehydrated foods. Helps to keep the weight down.

If we eat chili when we camp, it's made at home. I do agree that chili is a great winter food - but not really a great camping food (not for us anyway). I love hiking all day in the winter and then come home to a crock-pot full of chili or broccoli/cheese soup.

Yum to chili and yum to camping! I have never tried to make it at camp but I'm sure it could be done. It would be easier to make it at home though and transport it. You would not have to worry about keeping it cold either if it was winter time.

Oh we always make a big pot of it at home when we know we are going camping. It's just so much easier then trying to make it at a camp. Now if you are 'camping' in a nice travel trailer then that's another story.

have frozen chili for future eating . guess that would work if placed in a cooler , then just warm on the fire . just make sure you let expansion room in the container before freezing.
will have to try a ziplock bag next time i freeze some.

If we want something like stew or chili, I make it ahead of time and freeze it. Then I put it in the ice chest and just reheat it when we want it at the campsite. I agree with IndianaHiker about carrying dehydrated food while you are backpacking. Dehydrated foods are easy to reconstitute and heat over a campfire.

I have a solution for you.

I make a big pot of chili at home, and then dehydrate it.

Voila, Dehydrated chili ready for backpacking.

Easy-peasy.

My kinda thinking msdoolittle! I haven't tried dehydrating chili yet, but it's on my list of things to try. We dehydrate a LOT of stuff around here!

I agree, chili is wonderful to have when the weather is cold out. Just thinking about it warms my up. I love to add black beans and hot chili oil to it to make it extra spicy.
