Aluminum foil dinners have been popular with scout troops around here since before my time. Build them at home then pile coals on it to cook. Great for a first meal out or for an overnighter. We slice everything up first rather than a whole baked potato.

In addition to baked potato, we also do corn on the cob the same way. I like to peel the husk back a little, smear some butter in there, fold the husk back around the cob, then wrap it up with a splash or two of water in with the foil.

I grill my corn on the cob the same way...in the husk, and it turns out great! And we do this frequently because I am a Nebraska native, so, that's like our staple food ;-)

Seeing it happen and the aftermath is a bit of a surprise: exploding food isn't something most folks encounter on a regular basis. Hot starch is like hot sugar, it burns 'faster' than boiling water, and can blister skin like water can't in the same amount of time.

Anything that can 'blow up' while being cooked in a microwave has the same potential in a campfire, and without the machine to contain the mess made when it happens! HAHAHA

Yum! You guys are making me hungry! I've done all of the above in my time. I like to place my dutch oven over some coals with some coals on the lid and slow cook my beef stew. When you get back to camp, fry up some cornbread and you're set! We always take veggies already chopped up except for the potatoes and use them for stews and soups while we are camping. They will keep if you place them in a bit of water and keep them in the cooler.

My brother and I used to cook bacon in the coals of the fire when we were kids. Mmmm, bacon.

Now they have foil bags for using in the oven or on the grill top that work really well for this kind of cooking.

I have baked potatoes using foil on top of the grill, but I've never thought to bury them. This does sound pretty interesting and it also frees up space to add more meat to the top of the grill. Great idea! I will have to try it!

Ah yes, corn still in the husk. We have been doing that at home on the grill for years. Soak them in salt water all night and grill in the husk. Yummy stuff.

When the going gets tough, the tough don't notice.

Oh yeah! Wash them, poke holes, add a little butter if you have it, wrap in foil and lay it on the coals. Dessert.
