Default Early B-Day present

So a few months early I finally got something I've been waiting for. More outdoor cooking equipment. These are all hand made by a blacksmith in south Florida. He travels up to my area once a year for a civil war re-enactment which was this weekend. I had to burn some of the stuff off and season them today, but they are looking good. Way too heavy for back packing, but maybe for camping and will be getting a lot of use at home. I even got a little flipper he makes too.

Well the B-day is not until April, and I'm the type of person who buys something then comes home with something and thanks the wife for the b-day gift. But this guy only comes up to the area once a year that I know of. I've used my brothers, he has the same setup except for the hanging grate from the tripod. It is great, and the guy that made this seems to be a lot better quality then others in the area.

I'm thinking I may do some chili in the dutch oven with the tripod. Not sure what to cook first.

That looks like a pretty sweet setup Jason! I would love something like that for camping or even to use at home. I love outdoor cooking when the weather agrees.

Happy early birthday, Jason! I am the same way with presents! I buy what I want, then tell my man, "thanks". This looks like a great set up, I might look into something like it.

If you can hit up the civil war re-enactments. The stuff I was finding at most stores does not compare. I have a light weight tripod I first bought. It is nice, but nothing like this beast. But I'm a sucker for cast iron, it is just difficult to haul around when camping. If you are in the south Florida area, I can send you the guys info. I liked his work over the other blacksmiths there. But there are other styles out there too.

Good stuff. Out here the buckskinners favor iron work. I used to go see an old guy from Michigan every fall. He was a forester with a degree from 1938. We would make pancakes and then fire up the forge with coal and a hand crank. I have made many implements over the years, but prefer to cook with just a dutch oven, a shovel and a pot lifter.

That is an awesome looking set-up you have there Jason. We are working on getting some new outdoor cookware too. They can be a bit pricey, but they will last a zillion years!
