| What is pays off with is weight savings (for backpackers).
I try to avoid preservatives, which most freeze-dried foods have in order to extend the shelf-life.
You can get off-the-shelf alternatives like Annie's and dry or dehdrate your own alternatives. It's almost always cheaper to do it yourself.
