Default Freeze Dried Food?

Some people claim that using this type of meals for camping does pay off financially. I just don't see it happen. It is way cheaper to bring vegetables, cereals and smoked meat you're going to process yourself.

What is pays off with is weight savings (for backpackers).

I try to avoid preservatives, which most freeze-dried foods have in order to extend the shelf-life.

You can get off-the-shelf alternatives like Annie's and dry or dehdrate your own alternatives. It's almost always cheaper to do it yourself.

The attraction of freeze dried food has never been the cost. It is all about saving weight. After a few days it makes most people flatulent. It has improved lots in the last 30 years or so.
