Default MREs

Does anyone take MREs with them when they are hiking? I do because I find they are easy to carry and eat. I know some of them aren't as delicious as a home cooked meal but they do work for what I want them to. Does anyone else use MREs?

My nephew doesn't camp or hike but he does lie to eat MREs. Strange? I don't know, never tried them but they do bring back memorys for my dad.

I haven't had those in YEARS! But I remember my dad got them for us from a place called Pappy's Army Supply in Goldsboro, N.C., every time we went camping. These days, all camp supply stores have the "new age" MREs. But I'll tell ya, I actually miss eating the military brand. I might look into getting some on my next trip.

Where do you get yours?

I see BassPro has a version of them. To be honest though, I do not think I want to be the first one to try one. I will wait for someone else to buy them and eat them to tell me how they are first.

There is an army surplus store near me I've seen them at. I don't use them, I'd rather do trail mix and other stuff like peanut butter and crackers if I'm going to be on a quick hike and I need to travel light. MREs aren't noted for their gourmet taste! I do buy some things at the army surplus though.

I actually like them. I was in the Army when they first came out back in the early 80's. It was a nice change from the old C-rations...which I also liked. Then again I like Airline food back in the day when you actually got a meal on board. TV dinners are another favorite of mine too! Any how, MRE's have come a long way, now with their own heaters and a much better variety of meals. Most back packer won't mess with MRE's because of their weight, excessive calories, and flavor. You can get much better tasting meals from Mountain House freeze dried food. Those are absolutely great meals. MRE's bring back good memories though. I still have an MRE cookbook put out by the folks who make Tabasco sauce.

My biggest memory is trying to take a dump after coming back from the field and that isn't a good memory.
