Default Simple fire?

My son likes to do things the basic way and he cooks on a simple campfire with a tin pot and a tin kettle. Do you do this or do you use calor gas or something else?

I do it like your son when backpacking. It saves on weight. The rest of the time I use various stoves.

I don't own a stove ...yet, I prefer to use an open fire to cook with. Most of my meals when hiking around are really simple.

I cook on the fire if I'm there for the night and have one going, if it's a quick stop the stove comes out and away I go without the need to build and then make sure it's completely out and scatter the evidence.

Backcountry camp/cook fires are rapidly becoming a luxury. As foot traffic increases, more and more and even more areas are becoming "no fire" zones. Other areas are requiring fire pans or fire blankets if a fire is being used, resulting in more time required dissipating the ashes according to the regs. Disregarding the regs, just gives the beaureaucrats more excuses to impose more regs, screwing it up for everybody.
