Default soup for the trip

Does anyone do batches of soup to freeze at home for a few days before you head out on a trip? I think as long as you have good containers to keep it in during the hike to the lot you would be okay with it, right?

I love freezing and storing in Ziplock bags. I've taken chili, split pea soup and beef stew camping with me. Easy meal after a long day. Just re-heat and serve.

We do this a lot also when we are going camping. As you said Hazel, it makes for an easy meal at the end of the day. Just put it in the pan and heat it up!

Not only do we bring frozen soups, chili's, etc., but we also bring lots of frozen stuff to cook while camping. It also helps keep coolers cold and lets ya pack more food and less ice

I freeze soup into cubes and vacuum pack it, then thaw it enough to flatten and refreeze it. Ham and bean soup I'm eating right now, just throw the bag in hot water, snip the top off when heated and eat right out of the bag.

I rinse out the bags and reuse them, cause I'm a cheap b*stard.

Hungarian mushroom soup served with roast beef sandwiches on toasted rye is a favorite on our fall camping trip. It really doesn't freeze very well (it separates), so I make it a night or two before and put it in the cooler.

Another favorite is chicken and sausage gumbo, also made in advance (it's better reheated anyhow, and I don't want to waste time on the trip making roux).

Eaglescout, my mouth is watering! I have not brought soup on any of our camping trips. I guess I figured it would end up spilling or something. I might try to bring soup next time, because I love soup.

I like the idea of storing the soup in Ziploc bags. That would save on carrying containers. I have used the bags to bring in my wife's home-made pasta. Next time we're bringing soup.

Plus the fact you can freeze them flat so it will take up less room in the cooler and you can safely trash the plastic bags instead of having to deal with a container. Frozen anything like this is just a win, win situation.

I have never tried taking soup, but I do freeze my meat flat (ground anyway) so that it takes up less storage. I might have to try the soup idea too though!
