Default Crockpot Venison Roast

This was my first attempt at cooking venison and a friend gave me this recipe for the crock pot. This was really easy and very good! Everyone else must have thought it was pretty good too because there was nothing left!

Ingredients:
1 venison roast, about 3 to 4 pounds, leg or rump
1 can (12 ounces) beer
3 cloves garlic, minced
salt and pepper
2 onions, sliced
3 bay leaves
2 cups Barbecue Sauce, your favorite

Directions:
Trim excess fat from venison. In large bowl combine beer, garlic, salt, pepper, onions and bay leaves; add venison (the marinade should cover meat). Marinate in refrigerator for 12 hours, turning occasionally. Remove venison and onions from marinade and place in slow cooker/Crock Pot. Pour 1 cup Barbecue Sauce over top. Cover and cook on LOW for 10 - 12 hours. Serve with remaining Barbecue Sauce.

That looks like a nice recipe. I like to add potatoes, carrots, and whatever vegetables are around to make it a one pot meal. Slow and wet heat is great for game meats. That is why a Dutch Oven is the perfect way to cook it. I have cooked buffalo for Thanksgiving many times over the years.

That sounds like a venison stew. Very delicious sounding. Have any of you ever mixed venison with ground beef? I've had burgers like that before and they were pretty good. I love garlic on everything so the crock pot recipe sounds very nice.

Who doesn't like "good" and "easy"? Venison is very tasty stuff, and cooking it slowly is such an effective way to prepare it. Nice recipe.

FreeWilly,
I like to add pork sausage to ground venison for chili type dishes. Buffalo, moose, and elk are fine without adding other types of meat. I bought a mule once from a guy who had just come back from a hunt in BC. He gave me some ground moose meat which I made into chili with a recipe from the OK state fair. I used New Mexican chilis. People still mention it 5 years later.

This sounds really good and all the others too. I've never tried to do a venison roast before in the crock pot. Now I will just have to get one and give it a try.

I'm glad I checked in here. We have someone that will be giving us some deer meat roast soon and I was wondering how the best way of cooking them would be. I think I will print out that recipe and give it a try.
