Default Neat idea - Squash cooking

So before you all get sick of me talking about the re-enactment, one more thing I found out. Talking to one of the guys there, he grows Seminole pumpkins. These are sort of a softball sized squash. He brings them for a meal. To make his meals he slices one in half and takes out the seeds. He then mushes the insides with a spoon, and adds in whatever he wants. He had canned mullet (a type of fish) mixed in at the time. Wraps them in tin foil and tosses them on coals or a grate until done. He said this way he has to only clean the spoon, no dishes and other things to clean. I thought it was a pretty neat idea, and not sure if something like this was shared or not.

That is a great idea. I saw that method last year at a primitive cooking class.

I like winter squash on the fire, but never thought to add the rest of the meal in the center. I'll be experimenting with this recipe (without the fishing bait) next fall.

That does sound like a really good idea. I would think you could do this with Acorn squash also? I'm with you Judy Ann, I would leave the can fish out too! (I might try fresh fish though if I had some).
