I can vouch for this stuff working quite well, but in most situations a lighter or some matches will serve you just as well. It's always a good idea to have more than one way of starting a fire handy, though.

I keep one as a backup. I will occasionally start a fire or light my stove to keep fresh. The stove is easy but there is a bit of art to starting a fire. I kinda cheat and soak cotton balls in petroleum jelly. Makes the fire starting much easier. Bonus with the cotton balls is that it will burn in almost any weather and will burn for a few minutes to get the wet sticks burning.

The smaller one often breaks. The bigger version works really well. A nice trinket to mess with and have fun, but IMO, if you have at least two other methods to start fire with, chances are you'll never use it unless you want to play with it.
That being said, I'm pretty impressed with mine.

Hi...

That's one of the items that I carry in my BOB.

If you saw the movie, The Book of Eli, a post apocalyptic saga, you might remember him striking his firesteel to make fire when he cooked up the strange cat creature.

I keep one in my fire kit as a back up to my butane lighter. I, on the other hand, only carry two fire starting devices. A butane lighter and the firesteel. Over the years I've refined my fire starting kit to the point where if my lighter doesn't work, the firesteel will.

HYOH, YMMV, batt. not included, Pregnant and nursing mothers should consult a doctor, yada, yada.
