Wow. Batteries are our main concern too, its one of those things you never think about until you are out somewhere and realize you need an extra set. Three years is pretty nice too.

I really like the Petzl Tikka, but there are tons of good LED options. I like a light that I can operate while wearing gloves, and I hate the ones that have the batteries on the back of your head, so you can't wear it while lying down in the tent.

I've got a green one from Lowes. It has six lights, two red, two small white and two big white. It can be red only (for saving night vision and reading Maps in the dark), small white (for focused light, working in tight quarters), large white (floodlight) or both white sets together. It runs on two AA batteries. I crawled and walked around in drain tunnels under Asheville for two days geocaching, have done a number of under house chores, and my daughter plays with it a lot. I haven't changed the batteries in two years. Switch has a nice rubberized coating and cycles smoothly.

I just got a new head lamp. It was a present from my father in law. I have been wanting a new one for awhile now, I just never got around to asking anyone for it.

I have numerous headlamps for different uses. I just cracked the case on one of the cheaper walmart ones and it doesn't make contact right so shines dim if at all. I have a tiny petzel that weighs less than an oz. that is kept tucked in my multi pitch climbing gear. I just got one with a crank instead of batteries for carry in BOB. It has three led's but not as bright as the ones my wife and I got with 3 led's and uses 2 watch type batteries. I also have an older rayovac with led's and halogen lights and an older halogen that I modified for winter use. I added a battery pack with enough wire to keep the battery pack in a pocket inside the jacket. A bit heavy but works when real cold.
