I use poly rope over strips of denim to protect the tree. I had webbing break a cpl times. I don't usually change my tarp setup. I can see out the end or have one side set up higher like a porch roof. You would have to restake it to make that change. For the rain the tarp is under the tarp ridge line so water off that is no prob. I use amsteel slings and they have knots in them so if the part outside the tarp gets wet when the water reaches the knot it drips to the ground and doesn't continue down the line. Yes I have had the hammock on the trail. I have used it more checking things in the yard. I know I have a cpl setups that will work to freezing and I am checking out some stuff to get me near the teens. I think I'll have to use a pad to get under 20 but I won't be doing much of that.
Last night at 25 I had a cpl. cold spots. I am going to put shock cord on the sides of the underquilt and change how they are hung a little. I think the cold may have been caused by rubbing against the very heavy frost on the inside of the tarp. The humidity was in the high 80's last night, too. I will try to keep the tarp higher.

How chilly was it? I heard you can sometimes coat the cords with a type of water repellent, forget the name of it now as it was a few years ago but a buddy swears by it.

I went out this morning for an hour at 23. The down underquilt was covered with frost just like everything else. It took awhile for my body to heat things up but after it did I was ok. Not exactly toasty warm but I think I could have slept. I think I need to make a sock to keep the frost off things I'm going to be sleeping in.

You are making a science of winter hanging Charlie. Is there an active group of hangers up your way?
I will keep practicing, however as long as my old dog likes to travel with me, we'll probably sleep in a tent. She is content laying around while I hang, but come bedtime, she likes her creature comforts! ;-)
