| I have been an REI member for well over ten years and buy most of my gear there. I even have an REI credit card that gives me additional savings. They are primarily for backpacking, biking, skiing and water sports. While their prices are high their customer service is beyond belief. They also run some pretty amazing web deals, in-store clearances and annual sales. If you become a member of the coop, your purchases earn annual awards good towards future purchases. You also receive instant discounts.
There is not a store near me in south Florida but I have visited probably half their stores around the country over years while traveling for business. They will take back pretty much anything for any reason with only a few exceptions. I had a pair of Vasque Wasatch GTX hiking boots that I put over a 1,000 miles on and when the soles delaminated they actually replaced them for free. I was only wanting a discount on a new pair but the manager approved the exchange.
If you are more into hunting and fishing you are probably better off at Ganders, Bass Pro, Cabellas or similar outlets as they cater more to sportsmen. REI definitely offers the latest high tech, lightweight outdoor gear and clothing.
Yes, most REI members and staff are what you might call "tree huggers" that are primarily focused on conservation. Our motto is, "Pack it in, Pack it out." While there are always exceptions, I have visited dozens of REI outlets across the USA and have found their staff to be very knowledgeable and open minded. You shouldn't feel restricted because you like to hunt and fish. Just don't throw your empties in the lake. Not that I think that you do, but I have seen this nasty habit all across our beautiful country.
