Off topic alert people! I think that many survival experts appreciate redundancy. So, buy him something useful and even if he has it he will find a good use for it, I'm sure.

I go with pathfinders suggestions. Buy him expendables. Food, batteries, clothes, etc. Just make sure the stuff you get fits his quality standards.
