I found a pop up for sale within our budget, but the darn thing has some mildew. Guess that's why it's in the budget Anyway, what would you do in this case? Would you completely gut it or would you just repair where mildew is visible?

What caused the mildew? Is there a leak or was the top down for a long time and was left moist? I would try to find the cause and go from there. I would most likely clean it and see if it comes back too.
I would clean it too and pop it up and let it air out. I would clean it with hot water and bleach. Leave it popped up for a week or so and let it get all aired out. Jason was right on, see if it comes back.
You should be very careful about mildew. If anyone has allergies it can really wreak havoc on their system. As long as you are fully cleaning it then I guess it should be okay.
Doing a clean up could be easier than you think. A buddy of mine got a cheap camper and it was all rain water dried up and nasty, no real mold or mildew and after putting a days worth of work (and time to drink some beers back) it looks almost new.
That's pretty cool Looey! I love a good bargain, as long as it turns out to be a bargain and not a total wreck. There are a lot of things I have got for little to no price. I go on to my local Freecycle and I've gotten everything from refrigerators to toys for the kids. We are always giving away kids clothes and then finding someone who has the sizes we need. I love that site.
This might be a silly question, but is mildew as dangerous to our health as mold? I know it would be bad for allergies, but aside from that are there any other adverse health effects from it?
Jason is right. You must first examine what caused the mildew. If there is a leak somewhere, it would take additional cost for repairs aside from cleaning it up.
Thanks for your input, everyone We're going to pass on this one because we aren't sure what caused the mildew and the sellers are acting a little squirrely. We're not in a big rush to buy something so hopefully if we take our time we can find a good deal on something that doesn't need so much work.
That's probably a smart decision, Alexis. Mildew can be particularly hard to get rid on on some surfaces, especially fabric. Better to take your time and find something not showing such obvious signs of possible problems.
