Default Afield with horse blanket pins...!!

I usually don't trek very far,
when all around me black bears are.

Hi...

Do you know what horse blanket pins are, and how they can help you when you're afield?

Hi...

Okay...horse blanket pins.

You rarely hear about them any more, as horse people have little use for them now. They are heavy duty safety pins, about four inches long, and were used to keep horse blankets properly pinned to the shape of the horse.

Now, horse blankets come with velcro, etc. already attached, which makes fitting the blanket to the horses much easier.

Have you ever had a zipper that wouldn't close? These large safety pins can make an immediete repair, and close up that opening that would otherwise allow cold air to enter.

I have a snow machine suit with a long leg zipper that no longer closes. That can really ruin your day in cold weather. So, I broke out the horse blanket pins. Condition corrected.

You have some loose straps on your backpacking gear? These sturdy safety pins can effect a temporary repair.

They have many uses to the hiker, camper, etc.

They can easily be found for sale on the 'net. Caution: many of them are grossly overpriced.

Arlo, is that a horse blanket pin piercing I see?

In the old camping and survival books they spoke of using horse blanket pins to keep your blankets arranged properly in your bedroll. Today bedrolls are considered too heavy and old-fashioned. Perhaps they are, but they still have a place in camping. If you have a bunch of unexpected visitors, sleeping bags are not needed. Improvised bedrolls will do just fine. The "heat range" can be adjusted easily by adding or removing blankets. A few horse blanket pins might be very handy to have around.
Thanks for reminding us of an old device that still has uses in our modern world!

Horse blanket pins were also what we used to hold our tartan wrap around skirts closed with back in the 60's. They were very useful and some were very pretty.

Hi...

You're welcome, beemerphil.

If we thought more about it, I bet we could come up with many other uses for them, especially on the campground, eh?

Arlo...you look like a real piece of work with that blanket pin through your nose. Here, let me remove it for you. Ow! Ow! Ow! Ow! Nurse...!!

Yeah, I remember my Dad had some in the barn. I would play with them and with the blankets. We had a lot of good times playing horse with those blankets and pins. He had brass pins that he used. We also had some old hames that we used with the mules when we plowed in the fields.
