| Altoids tin knife Many of you may carry altoids tin survival kits and the edged tools contained within may vary. Some people use razor blades but I do not personally find them very useful. Small pocket knives are OK as well but they can be prone to failure with hard use. I prefer to carry a knife designed for the personal survival kit also know as a PSK knife. There are many versions out there with some being better than others but here is a version that I prefer. It also shows how to maximize its usefulness by adding an improvised handle.
Here is the knife compared to a standard knife
I used a split Hickory branch to create handle scales. Then used the outer sheath of 550 cord to wrap from the handle toward the knife creating a "vice" effect. Surprisingly the knife was very stable inside this construct and although there was some minor wiggle it took everything I threw at it.
Even batoning...
This test was about making fire prep and I had no problem with that.
