| Catspa,
Some of my Mom's relatives moved to the Mat-Su Valley in the 1930s. My uncle was around Homer and Soldotna for 30 years but moved outside about 10 years ago. I drove to see them from Haines the end of the lline for the Ferry. He lives in Anacortes, WA and did the mail run by boat in the San Jaun Is until he was too old for the rough weather.
Went over the Chilkoot in about 1993. I have taken the ferry twice which I can recommend highly over a cruise ship. Went to the interior in a rented pick-up with a camper in about 2002. I really like the far north. The people are sturdy and ready to party all the time.
My family moved to WA in 1889, right before it became a state settlling in Kalama because they thought the railroad was headed there, but it went to Tacoma instead. Lots of relatives in the logging and timber mill business around Centralia and Longview.
My grandfather was a school principal, Dad taught in Cheney at what is now EWU. He later became a real estate develper and owner of a cattle ranch in Arizona.
The U is hard to beat in lots of things, especially forestry, but they revamped the program. We used to have our own College of Forest Resources withn the university. It is still in the top three world-wide.
Last year I went on my first cruise ship with the family to SE. It was a disaster. After all that time working in the bush, it felt like we never got to see Alaska at all. I am really looking forward to the fish camp on Baranoff this fall. But it is going to be wet, SE Alaska wet at the rainiest time of year. The antidote for Nevada.
