Default Bear Grylls, or what not to do in a survival situation.

If you don't know him he is the protagonist of a "reallity show" called Man vs. Wild, if you guessed that it's a show about survival tips, than you guessed correctly.

I'm surprised by the number of people that still think the show is not scripted, even tho it has a disclaimer at the start. People have some common sense if you are ever in a situation that is shown on the show, just do the opposite of what Grylls is doing and you might survive. He has some useful tips but they are far and wide and the average viewer who's idea of camping is going for a stroll in the park, has no idea what advice to listen to and what not to. Bottom line, this show will get somebody killed.

I also noticed something was off with this show when the first time I saw the show he was walking in the desert by day and resting by night. I looked around on the net and found out that he is not really surviving the situations, he is just running around with a crew and doing stunts.
I enjoy the show personally, it has somewhat of an educational value if you know what to pick up on and the places he visits usually look awesome.

I generally don't have a problem with this shows, I admit I actually enjoy it myself, but the fact that it's passed off in the earlier seasons as survival techniques is a little disconcerting. Well the people who watch the show and believe it's all real don't usually go camping so, I guess it's not that dangerous, but you never know.

I can't help but think that somewhere there is a bunch of people somersaulting through the forest and leaping from trees so they can cross the deadly river rapids in a dead yak's belly.

Well if you see a news report that a man got stuck with his head in the mud when he tried to jump of a waterfall, than you will know where he got the idea .

Certainly some of what he's doing is legit. It's just that the stuff that isn't legit is totally bonkers.

It's entertaining. Hopefully no one tries to take it as anything other than that.

I read an article where someone up north, might have even been Canada, tried to emulate him and Survivorman, sorry the real name escapes me at the moment. An inexperience person went out into the winter with little to nothing, including the wrong clothing. Lasted I think it was 2 or 3 days before passing away due the cold at night and not having a fire.

The article talked about the differences between the two shows and made some valid points. Survivorman, is more practical Bear Grylls with all his jumping, and running, while may get the job done, takes more risks. A lot of the risks, if not done properly, could lean to broken bones, which if he was truly out there alone, would be deadly. The article did rip into each show, but seemed to really get on Grylls case. Saying some stuff was planned by his crew. That with the youtube videos out there showing spots where he was and civilization was within eye sight, or him jumping over stuff when he could have just as easily walked around, makes me believe his show is more just that, a show. There are some tidbits of good information in there, but I would not follow his examples if I was in a true survival situation.

All pages - BearWiki this site contains false or bad information given on the show. The problem is when he does the stunts he doesn't tell people he has a harness on too, the cave has been cheeked before hand and so on. He even does unnecessary stuff and tells people it's crucial to survive, for example he makes an unnecessarily dangerous clime to eat some egg shells to keep his calcium up, it takes years for calcium to leave your body...
I'm sure there are a bunch of people who tried to do some of the stunts and got seriously heart, I'd have no problem with it if the disclaimer were more specific not just something put there for plausible deniability.

i watch this show from time to time, but I would never take any of this seriously. I mean if it was a choice between eating a deadly scorpion (which I have seen him do) or a raw fish fresh out of the water (which I have also seen him do) and survival I might just want to perish! I think there are many ways to survive out there without putting your life at risk.

I wouldn't try some of those things just because I watched him. Just watching that does not makes you an expert. That would be as silly as watching 5 episodes of ER and thinking I could perform an operation.
