Three things to look for in a compass is that it is liquid filled, that it has a jewelled bearing and that it has 2 and 3 degree increments.

Always make sure that you compass is firmly attached to your pack or belt - keeping it a pocket and pulling it out to use as you need it will result in a lost compass 90ù of the time !

I prefer to keep it tied to me or my clothing. I always have the absolute basics on me, pocket knife..Swiss army type or multi tool, Compass and map, and a basic survival kit...this can be a pocket type or a small kit attached to my knife sheath on my belt.

There are more than a few companies that you can consider. These include Brunton, Silva and Suunto. My favorite of them is Suunto A-30 Compass. It will surely satisfy the needs of both beginners and intermediate orienteering enthusiast.

Here is one of my knives with the survival kit I made from an old VS17 panel. It's mounted on a Buck Night Hawk. Also there is a map case and two compasses cases made from the same material. The knife in the middle is one that I made, it's a copy of the Tom Brown Tracker Knife I wanted to test out prior to buying one.
