Default Could You?

Say you had a disaster and you weren't hurt. Could you take care of yourself before aid came your way? What if you had to survive like the people in Haiti have had to? Would you be able to do so for any length of time?

Right now, I say I couldn't but you never know unless you are in that situation. I think we all have the survival instinct in us that helps us survive.

I agree with Flower everyone has that survival instinct. You do what you have to do to survive. It is scary thinking about it that is for sure but I would do whatever I had to.

I think our family (my husband, daughter, and myself) would be fine. We keep stored canned foods and are in the process of purchasing a few cases of MRE's and we have lots of bottled water. We also know how to find these things (food/water) once we use our supplies up. The rest of my family (parents etc.) are a different story they don't even keep enough food in the house to last a week and they think we are crazy "survivalists" always expecting the worst to happen. Maybe we are but at least I am prepared!

had to do it after Rita hit my area. no power for a month, no grocery stores, no running water for quite a while. And when the national guard showed up, they just complicated the matter by not allowing those who went out for food from returning to bring food to their trapped families. It sucked, but was also kind of fun.

That must have been awful going through that after the hurricane. I stock up right before hurricane season every year so I know if something like that happened here we would be okay. My family lives in Florida and I know they do the same thing.

Wow! That's wild Newanderthal. We have a lot of water and other non-perishables but I don't think we could go for a month. I do know we could survive for a few weeks and then start hunting for food in the surrounding woods. We were in the flooded areas that happened this weekend and we had to do without water for a day but no biggie there. We live out in the boonies so we are without one utility or another all of the time. Just take it as it lays is my philosophy. But we didn't get any flood damage so we were fine in our house.

I don't know that I could do it but I would be certainly willing to give it a good go. I don't know really-I mean I had some training, I was with the military for a while. But it wasn't the sort of thing that would help with an urban disaster.

Openair if you are in an urban area and disaster strikes your best course of action is going to be to get the hell out. If something happens like a major natural disaster or the stock market crashes or something like that being where the people are is not the way to go. As for our family yes, we could make it for awhile we have supplies and our prepared to defend them if it comes to it.

I think we could survive for a few days but that's about it. The disasters that have taken place around the world have made me realize that relief workers won't get to me soon enough so I'll have to take care of things on my own.
