Default Don't forget a whistle

My husband and I are really into watching survival shows and youtube videos, and a lot of people seem to forget the importance of a whistle. If you get lost in the wilderness a whistle can be an awesome way to help rescuers find your location. You won't be able to scream for help or shout out for long without losing your voice especially if you haven't had much water. Buy a whistle...they are like a $1 at Walmart and they might save your life!

That is a fantastic idea and you should probably stock up on them. Then make sure you have a few on you when ever you are going camping or hiking. Always pays to be careful.

Lamebeaver that makes a good argument for having a whistle.

That's a good idea. I honestly have never thought of it but I will now have to add a whistle to my camping/backpacking stuff. I guess you would be able to find whistles in sporting goods stores where the referee stuff would be?

I have whistles stashed in several places in my gear- especially on my PFD when I'm canoeing.

One important tip- if you get the kind of whistle that has the little ball in it, you need to make sure that the ball is made of something that won't get waterlogged in you get dunked. If the ball is too heavy the whistle won't work at all.

The little ball is called a pea. You might have heard the phrase "pea whistle." It's a whistle with a pea as part of its construction.

I just recently picked up a Fox40 Classic pea-less whistle for about 6 dollars. It's really LOUD! And -- not having a pea in it -- I don't need to be concerned with the pea getting wet from blowing it and freezing in colder weather. It's sitting on my key chain right now.

I've only had to use mine once (to scare a bear) but I always take it.
