I usually don't trek very far,
when all around me black bears are.

Bluesky has an excellent point. I always carry a Storm (brand name) whistle in my BOB. Storm whistles are LOUD...!!

Even outdoors, I've never blown it without holding my ears...!! They're an excelent signalling device.

I guess hand grenades would be my second choice.

Hark! Did I just hear a hand grenade explode? Ow! Ow! Ow!

Excellent point Blueskyy! I have always thought our outdoor gear was pretty well prepared, but this is omething we have overlooked as well. Definitely adding one to my shopping list!

When I lead kayak trips, my only requirement (besides a PFD) is that everyone have a whistle. I've had too many large groups get strung out on a river and the people at the back stop for lunch without telling anyone - whistles come in really handy for bringing the group back together!

Whistles are an essential piece of safety equipment in all of our outdoor gear. We are working on teaching our little girl to use one (buy earplugs for this). I even carry a whistle in my purse...you never know it might come in handy one day.

I carry my whistle on my key chain among other whistles when I hike. If I go somwhere I have to lock my house, or drive my jeep so my keys are with me where ever I go so is my whistle. I have one of those multi whistles with a magnifying glass, compas and thermometer. I figure if I have the whistle might as well make it multi purpose. A whistle can be good for lots of purposes. If a building is bombed or a natural disaster hit it and your trapped inside you can whistle to let somone know your alive, whistle if your being attacked to draw attention, or if stuffed in somones trunk whistle to alert people your locked in a trunk, if out hiking and hear gun shots to close to you whistle to let them know your a human and not a deer(may sound funny but a people have been shot during hunting season while mistaked for a animal).

Anyone every have this problem with a whistle. The areas that I have many ridge lines and hillls. When playing with a whistle trying to find one another we could hear the whistle but due to the lay of the land couldn't tell where the sound was coming from. There was no way to follow at it bounced around the hills and hollows.

Yeah- it can be really tough to follow the sound to the source- loud noises seem especially prone to this because the echoes are loud enough to confuse you, I think.
