Yes they are still available. Fire and me are not friends. I think I would buy an inreach or just keep some extra GPS batteries handy

The closest thing I have to a flare is a tracer round.

That will increase the pucker factor ten fold if you're in the search aircraft!

I love road flares (fusees). They will start a fire under almost any condition, and I always keep a few in the toolbox of the truck.

Aflare gun is highly recomended safety geer for boating down in bayou country. i cary a 12 gauge pistol in my personal fishing boat and keep my shells up to date. It's always in the bow compartment of the boat along with a few other recomended safety things.

I would rarely use these, mainly because I don't have any But, seriously, I can't see myself in need of these things. Maybe on a solo cruise.

I do carry the 12 ga. flares & launcher on my big boat. I have never carried them into the woods...but there have been times when I thought about it. Like Catspa said...they'll light a fire no foolin around.

We carry an extra cell phone or two, but we never get that far away from civilization when we're out trekking. I don't think I've ever felt the need for a flare unless we were out on the water.
