Question Gps

I have been wondering how helpful is a GPS when you are in the wilderness. How reliable is it and would it still work if there is no communication signal in the deep forest?

GPS is satellite based, so normally, the only place you won't have a signal is in a ravine or under VERY thick cover.

That being said, you should always have a compass and map as a backup. I have one, and it is very handy for off-trail hiking, but I always have a backup in case it fails.

A GPS has been a blessing for my Son In Law. He can get lost in a coat closet but since he got a good unit, his orientation has improved dramatically.

I have lost signals before but they do come back, even in the thickest overhead. It's still a quality tool but as with any high tech electronics, don't rely solely on it. Too many things can go wrong. GPS is a great tool to use with a map and compass, it can make navigating easier. Lamebeaver is right on, have a map and compass. I have three different GPS devices, knowing the correct way to use them is important( I don't use them all at once). Having ten years experience using handhelds in the field you tend to pick up on quirks in their operation. I still keep a map and compass.

I would love to get a unit instead of trying to work with my cell phone, while its a good phone the gps freaks out randomly and it does not give me a safe feeling. What are some good handhelds?

I love my basic Garmin eTrex. I can't count the number of times I push a few buttons and am on my way while my buddy is still trying to get his fancier unit in the right mode.

That's the problem with technoligy today, they pack so much stuff into something you can get overwhelmed with it all. I too have an eTrex, it's a relaible unit. There are different models of the eTrex, from plain black and white screens with a basic base map, to nice color screens with down loadable features to add maps of your own choosing. I got a good deal on my Magellan 500LE, it's not a bad unit but what a pain trying to use it at first. Plus Magellan has terrible customer service! Once I got used to it all I went back and picked up a Garmin Colorado 300. I like it much better. I'll stick with Garmin and try to locate another Colorado as a spare. They are discontinued but are still available. DeLorme is another quality GPS, they have a model with SPOT capabilities. I think Garmin may be working on the same thing. A lot of your new handhelds are coming out with touch screens, which I don't care for. That's just me, can't see touching something I am concentrating on to guide me around. You're bound to get bug juice or dirt all over it. Deet will really mess up a screen. Even with screen protectors it can be a mess. I'm sure no matter which unit you decide on, it will be fun to learn how to use it and you will enjoy having the extra navigational aid.

Sometimes I don't trek very far,
when all around me black bears are.

The previous posts offer good advice. And remember...it's useless if the battery(s) give out. Always carry spares.

Not to mention a map and compass....which you have practiced learning to use.

Just don't forget: The number one rule for using a GPS? MARK THE CAR! so when you are hopelessly lost you can just punch "CAR" as your destination. Nothing sucks like trying to backtrack on a two inch screen.
