My folks live Palm Springs in the winter. The tram is frequented by people from Los Angeles and tourists from all over. They are mostly urban people. The scenario above shows that the tram company was grossly negligent. I hope no one was injured or died from exposure.

Shouldn't the tram operators discouraged or even stopped selling them the tickets because of the coming storm?

That was my first thought. Break in and at least huddle out of the wind. Shelter problem solved.

Hi...

It was my understanding that a Ranger finally showed up and led them to an unheated, windowless shack where they huddled for the night.

The report also indicated that the Ranger did NOT take them to the locked building at the upper lift terminus because "there were firearms stored there".

The Dalai Lama went into a pizza joint. The server asked him what he wanted. He said "Can you make me one with everything"?

NOTE:

"Pathfinder", who is now posting on this forum, is NOT Pathfinder1, which is me...!!

Now I'm really curious. Why are firearms being stored in an empty building on top of a mountain?

To shoot down flying saucers that try to land on the mountain?

To give the ranger and his buddies something to shoot while they're wandering around the mountain drunk?

Every body knows flying saucers have a force field around them to protect from mean people who want to shoot at them and Rangers around here carry their guns on their belts to protect from Sasquatchs.

Sounds like an Al Quaida sleeper cell or Dept of Justice drug deal going down.

I am sorry but if you are on an 8500 foot mountain anything can go wrong. No way I would be out there with only 1 days worth of supplies on me.

I read an article on this and the ranger station is where the guns were and why the ranger would not allow them to stay there. The guns were not in the station/gift shop. The tram company said that they always leave a person behind (in this case the ranger) in the event that an emergency shut down of the tram is required and there are still hikers out.

Thanks Princess, that makes a little more sense but then why didn't the Ranger let them into the heated station instead of the goat corral or whatever it was? And if I was a Ranger authorized to carry a gun, it wouldn't be in the station.

No doubt they have several guns on hand, rifles or shotguns. It's good that they practice good judgement and take weapons security seriously. You never know what could happen. My Brother-in-law was a police officer, one day he found a car in a snowy ditch. The driver was OK but cold since he was stranded for several hours. My brother-in-law put the guy the the cruiser to warm up as they waited for the tow truck to arrive and get the vehicle out of the ditch. Once the tow truck arrived my brother-in-law got out to talk to the driver and left the other guy in the cruiser. The car was pulled out and my brother-in-law motioned for the other driver to come and get his vehicle. All was good and everyone went on their way. My brother-in-law gets in the cruiser and while driving back to town he notices that the small High Standard Riot shotgun was missing from the holder. After a few hours of investigating, the shotgun was recovered. It turns out while my Brother-in-law was out with the tow truck driver. The other guy tossed the shotgun in the ditch when no one was looking. When everyone parted ways, the bone head went back and got the shotgun. An even more interesting story is how they got it back!
