I don't know if you have a Sam's near you but ours had the newset SAS handbook and the Urban SAS handbook for $14.95 a piece. I've got to get back over there and pick them up myself!

Rabbit Snare
Rabbit traps requires some construction tools. The use of 20 gauge stainless steel wire, tape measure, pliers and chain nose of some. Cut some stainless steel wire 21 inches. At one end of an inch, make a loop of 1 inch and twist the wire around itself until firm. Through this smaller loop, run the other end by making a large loop and then repeat what you did with the other end (make a small loop and twist on itself). Then take a long piece of string and tie it to the second loop you just made. The pose and perhaps the bait with vegetables.

I usually don't trek very far,
when all around me black bears are.

One good book on snaring is Deadfalls and Snares, a Harding publication, and can be ordered from Fur-Fish-Game magazine...if they are still available. Book also has a section on steel traps, mostly older and/or antique traps. That magazine, by the way, is a favorite of trappers.

Regarding snaring, some animals could be caught/held in home made snares. In my own BOB, I carry three commercially made small animal snares, just in case. They are very inexpensive, and are nuch better than home made.
