Well, I agree with you that stupidity shouldn't be rewarded... but I have to admit, I do find it awfully entertaining.

As far as cutting off my limbs. Yeah, I think I could do it if it was life or death.

IF you just seen the movie and not read the book there was some additional information in the book. The second time Aron plunged the blade into the skin noticed a foul stench and hard gasses escaping. This indicates that the limb is basically decomposing while attached due to the lack of blood flow. He mention in the book that he was so disgusted by that, that he wanted it removed and no longer had an attachment to the limb. I can understand that as even if he had food and water left that would last for days the decaying limb would have killed him sooner or latter.

Aron was a very accomplished climber and athlete, and frequently took solo treks and climbs of a week or more, so he didn't see this as any big deal. IIRC, Outside magazine published an article that said he originally left a note he was going to one place, then changed his mind on the way and went to Utah instead. So he knew nobody was coming for him.

It's reasonable to admire his toughness and determination to survive, and possible at the same time to recognize that his risk tolerance is way too high for most people to relate to. Eventually, nature's gonna kill him. Until then, he's famous.

Nature isn't going to kill him. He's going to kill himself out in the wild. His choices, his consequences, not nature's fault.

I see your point, and maybe it's nit-picky of me to see a distinction, but I don't think he intends to kill himself. However, nature is chock full of strong forces, capable of squashing humans without notice, and he doesn't show too good a track record of respecting them.

I agree, complacency is at work here. Get too over confident and cocky and you start taking chances. Folks get too comfortable with their surroundings and don't think.

Chadtower,

I don't think he chose to become pinned, and Nature is exactly what would have killed him had he not acted in a bold sort of way. I agree with Catspa.

It was not nature that was killing him. What was killing him was time. Having told someone where he was going, and when he would be back, would have given him a chance at rescue. Not doing that was his choice. Yeah, he still would have been pinned and injured, but he would have had a much better chance at rescue.
