I use a Swedish firesteel, the large one. It's the only method that has never failed. I once carried matches or a lighter as backup, only to be let down by failure.
I just carry two fire steels and some cotton balls or use birck bark where available.

I tried that with a tortilla chip one evening which led to playing around with olive oil and everything natural within reach. The folks down the way from me got a torch out of their boat and had a bonfire going in seconds...almost ruined an hours worth of entertaining myself!
