The kind I am talking about are the little $1.00 models about the size of a little tissue pack. They go all the way up to full tarps with the reflective surface on one side. The idea behind the small, cheap ones are they can fit in a pocket or purse so easy so no excuse not to have one with at all times.

Ooops, theres that internet lying again. I just went in and fished one out like we give the kids. It was $1.99, not $1.00

One time I was going to "go light" on a motorcycle trip, and took a space blanket(the heavier survival-type multi-use type) as my sleeping system. It DID work for keeping me warm, but it was a sauna! I woke up sweating, and stinking, but I WAS warm. After a few days, I picked up a sleeping bag, and kept the space blanket for a ground cloth. I still have that original blanket, and it is still serviceable. These days I just carry one along for emergency uses. They are very versatile, and pretty light. Worth having.

Grabber makes a very nice space blanket and if you want to get really fancy they have a heavy duty all weather or "casualty" blanket that will last a long time. I find mylar blankets most useful as heat reflectors on lean to or tarp shelters. The casualty blankets make really good ground cloths also.
